Chargers Sign Retired Safety After Successful Minicamp Tryout
The Los Angeles Chargers have undergone such a dramatic overturn this offseason. It started back in January when they parted ways with Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco before hiring Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz to call the shots.
Harbaugh is now tasked with turning the team around after they went 5-12 last year. Los Angeles went through mandatory minicamp from Jun. 11-13 and decided to bring a safety out of retirement for the 2024 campaign.
Chargers News: Tony Jefferson Signs With Los Angeles
According to Jordan Schultz, free agent safety Tony Jefferson is signing with Los Angeles after a successful workout.
Jefferson announced his retirement from the NFL in 2023 after 10 seasons. Outside of Derwin James Jr., the Chargers have a young safety room and Jefferson adds a much-needed veteran presence back there.
In his 10-year career, Jefferson has compiled 492 total tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 20 QB hits, and four interceptions.
Jefferson suited up with the Baltimore Ravens from 2017-2019, and that's where he intertwined with Hortiz, who was the former Director of Player Personnel.
This offseason, Hortiz has brought a list of former Baltimore Ravens to LA, which includes Jefferson, Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins, Ben Mason, Hayden Hurst, and Bradley Bozeman.
The Chargers have made it clear they want to become a more physical and dominant team on the field. All their additions in free agency and the NFL Draft showcase that.
Jefferson now has a chance to make Los Angeles' 53-man roster when training camp rolls around next month.
