Chargers Starter Suffers Potentially Disastrous Training Camp Injury
By Jovan Alford
The Los Angeles Chargers have done a solid job staying injury-free through the first week of training camp. However, that changed at the drop of a dime on Tuesday as Los Angeles saw one of its young offensive linemen go down at practice.
Daniel Popper of The Athletic reported that third-year offensive lineman Jamaree Salyer went down during an 11-on-11 play and was rolled up on. Popper adds that Salyer got up and tested out his leg before walking with the training staff
Anytime you hear of an offensive or defensive lineman getting rolled up during a play, it's never a good sight to see on the field. The good news for the Chargers is that Salyer was able to get up under his own power and walk with trainers.
Los Angeles can ill-afford to lose Salyer, who played a ton of football over his first two seasons in the NFL.
Last season, the former sixth-round pick started in all 17 games at right guard for the Chargers after starting in 14 games at left tackle as a rookie. Salyer’s ability to play multiple positions on the offensive line benefits not only himself but the Chargers.
Trey Pipkins III and Salyer are likely batting for the starting right guard spot this season after Pipkins started 17 games at tackle in 2023. Nonetheless, we don't know the extent of Salyer's injury, but hopefully, we get an update from head coach Jim Harbaugh after practice.
