The Los Angeles Chargers made a notable move on the defensive line on Thursday, signing veteran defensive lineman Teair Tart, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. However, to make room on the 90-man roster for Tartt, the Chargers had to let go of one of their rookies in the secondary.

According to Daniel Popper of The Athletic, the Chargers waived rookie safety Jalyn Phillips to get Tartt on the roster. Chargers fans weren’t ecstatic to see the team move on from the rookie safety, who was signed as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL Draft.

Phillips spent five seasons at the University of Clemson, where he lined up at safety and nickel cornerback. The 6-foot defensive back had a solid career with the Tigers, playing in 60 games (29 starts).

He produced 149 total tackles, 11 pass deflections, five tackles for loss, two interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble.

Phillips was listed as the fourth-team safety on the Chargers’ depth chart behind Tony Jefferson, AJ Finley, and Derwin James Jr. The undrafted free agent had a tough challenge of making the 53-man roster, but could’ve been considered for the Chargers’ practice squad.

The former Clemson defensive back only played eight total snaps (5 on defense, 3 on special teams) in the Chargers’ preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks last week, which likely didn’t help his chances.

However, knowing how training camp rosters are always changing, maybe the Chargers bring back Phillips or he will find another opportunity with a different team in the league.
