Chargers Veteran Loses Job During Team's Week 5 Bye
The Los Angeles Chargers have their bye in Week 5. Even though it is early in the season, the bye has come at a great time for the Chargers.
After starting the season off 2-0, they dropped two straight games, with a 17-10 loss coming from the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4. Key starters like Justin Herbert, Joe Alt, Rashawn Slater, and Joey Bosa are dealing with some injuries.
So the week off should help. Meanwhile, a veteran starter lost his job during the bye as well.
Chargers News: Tony Jefferson Was Demoted
The Chargers' official Twitter page reported that the team released safety Tony Jefferson and then signed him back to the practice squad.
Jefferson was elevated to the active roster for the Week 4 contest after Derwin James was suspended for repeated violations of rules that are in place to protect player's health.
Although he was elevated, Jefferson didn't touch the field against the Chiefs. Instead, the trio of Alohi Gilman, Elijah Molden, and AJ Finley played all the snaps at safety.
Now with James slated to return after the bye week, the Chargers felt like Jefferson didn't need to be on the 53-man roster.
He's still on the practice squad if they do need him but as of now, Jefferson has been demoted. This season, the 32-year-old has logged just seven total snaps and that came in the Week 2 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Getting James back on the field is a massive boost as the Chargers look to get back on track starting in Week 6.
