Clippers Drop Massive Ty Lue News Ahead of Offseason

The Los Angeles Clippers and Ty Lue agreed to a multiyear extension on Wednesday that'll keep the NBA Finals-winning head coach with the organization as it faces an offseason of turmoil.

With Paul George's future up in the air, keeping Lue in Los Angeles establishes consistency and stability for the franchise. After joining the Clippers following his successful Cavaliers stint, Lue is 184-134 as a head coach (.579) and is widely regarded as one of the league's premier tacticians.

If the team wants to keep the Kawhi Leonard-Paul George core together, this is a fantastic start.

The exact details of the extension have not yet been released. Leonard signed a three-year extension in January, giving George and the organization a timeline from which to operate.

Los Angeles lost in the first round of the playoffs each of the last two seasons though won 51 games this year, showing clear progress. Leonard and George are as formidable of a duo as there is in the NBA, and Lue creates a trio to be reckoned with provided guys like James Harden can step up as well.

That represents the question and pivot point for the Clippers now. Harden is an unrestricted free agent and shot just 7-for-28 from the field in Los Angeles' final two losses. Leonard didn't play at all of course, so Los Angeles has to determine how to best support their inconsistent stars.

Between Leonard, George, and Harden, there's a significant amount of uncertainty surrounding the franchise. Lue's extension represents stability and losing him could've been a death blow to the current roster construction.

We'll see what happens with the three stars this offseason but Clippers fans have to be pleased with this news. Finding a new coach would've thrown another wrench into the equation, though now the front office can focus on re-signing George finding the right fits to hopefully compete for the NBA Finals in 2025.
