The NBA Finals are kicking off on Thursday but the entire NBA landscape is discussing the Los Angeles Lakers' head coaching search. What looked like a done deal with JJ Redick being the presumptive head coach took an unexpected turn on Thursday morning when Dan Hurley of UConn emerged as the favorite to get the job.

This caused a storm on social media with fans and media members alike being confused about this out-of-left-field candidate. Lakers players have generally been quiet about the subject but D'Angelo Russell didn't waste the opportunity to chime in. What he meant to say, however, is still up for debate.

Lakers News: D'Angelo Russell Posts Cryptic Message Following Dan Hurley Update

Russell's social media post consists of a single emoji. It could be read as the 28-year-old point guard knowing something people don't know yet, or just him being excited about the potential hire of Dan Hurley.

It could also be related to his potential free agency. Russell has a player option for $18 million for the 2024-25 season. He may choose to decline that option to try to get a longer-term, more lucrative deal. Given the Lakers' lack of financial flexibility and higher aspirations, it's difficult to foresee him getting that in Los Angeles. Therefore, there is a good chance he will not even be a Laker next season. Even if he were to opt into his player option, he is a likely trade candidate.

Yet, the post could be completely unrelated to the Lakers. It could be him trolling to get people talking. Regardless of what his motives were, it's safe to say that he succeeded. Now, we have to wait and see to find out what he actually meant.
