Dan Hurley's New UConn Contract Should Infuriate Lakers Fans
The Los Angeles Lakers are a franchise that will always be in the limelight. That has clearly been the case thus far this offseason as the Lakers were seeking a new head coach while looking to build a solid roster around LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Before the Lakers hired J.J. Redick, they made a hard push to land UConn's head coach Dan Hurley. He decided to stay put at UConn and chase a third straight national title. The Lakers offered Hurley a six-year, $70 million deal, which he declined.
The deal that Hurley just accepted with Connecticut will definitely upset the Laker fanbase.
Dan Hurley Signs a New Deal with UConn
According to Jon Rothstein of CBSSports, UConn and Hurley have agreed to terms on a six-year, $50 million extension.
He was reportedly looking to leverage the Lakers' deal to get a larger deal from Connecticut. Prior to this extension, he was on a six-year, $32 million deal with UConn.
With the final deal being $20 million less than the Lakers offer is jarring. Los Angeles once used to be a premier destination but it looks like things have drastically changed.
If Hurley decided to stay in UConn for the same or more money than LA's offer, it would make his decision seem more justified. Instead, it looks like he just wasted Los Angeles' time and wasn't seriously considering them.
He has said on multiple different occasions that wants to coach in the NBA and he had the chance with one of the biggest franchises in sports. He ultimately stirred clear but the offer he accepted from UConn makes that choice sting a bit more for the purple and gold fanbase.
And you can't blame them.
