East Contender Emerges as Potential Suitor for Paul George
By Jovan Alford
One of the potential biggest dominoes to fall this offseason is Los Angeles Clippers All-Star forward Paul George and what he decides to do in free agency. George hasn’t been given a contract extension from his hometown team, which has fueled numerous rumors about where he might go next.
The Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic have been the two most known suitors for George as they have the cap space to offer the star forward a max contract. However, it was reported earlier this week that the Sixers’ interest in George has ‘significantly waned,’ which sounded the alarm around the league.
Nonetheless, with the 2024 NBA draft and free agency on the horizon, we still don’t have a clue about where George is going. But according to the latest reporting from Marc Stein, there's a new suitor from the East lurking in the background for the All-Star forward.
Clippers Rumors: Knicks Interested in Potential Trade for Paul George
Marc Stein reported on Sunday (subscription required) that the New York Knicks are a potential trade suitor for Paul George.
“Another trusted source has advised me to keep the Knicks on the list as a potential trade suitor for George if the All-NBA swingman indeed opts into the final season of his current contract at $48.8 million," he wrote via Substack. "That step would position George to push for a trade to another team."
While it's interesting to see the Knicks throw their hat into the ring, the idea of a trade to the Big Apple is reliant on George opting into the final year of his deal. There have been no indications that the star forward will do that.
George has until June 29 to decide on his player option. If he opts in and pushes for a trade, the Clippers could try to go after OG Anunoby in a sign and trade, and the Knicks also send Bojan Bogdanovic in the deal.
However, the Clippers should also look to get a draft pick or Deuce McBride to see how bad the Knicks want George. With all that being said, it will be an interesting week for the Clippers and George as they could shake up the league.
