Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions will be hosting Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night in a Wild Card showdown.

This matchup is personal for both signal-callers and something Goff has highlighted. In 2021, Los Angeles traded Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2023 first-round pick for Stafford.

"I think it'll never leave me, and I think that's a good thing," Goff told ESPN on Wednesday.

It's easy to understand where he's coming from. Goff was the No. 1 overall in 2016 by the Rams and spent the first five years of his career in Los Angeles, including a Super Bowl LIII appearance in 2018. From 2016-2020, Goff threw for 18,171 yards with 107 passing touchdowns and 55 interceptions.

Even Rams head coach Sean McVay believes Goff deserved better treatment on his way out of town.

"Could it have been handled better on my end? Absolutely. I’ll never run away from that," McVay said. "He deserved better than the way that it all went down."

Now we fast forward three years later and the two are squaring off for the first time since the trade went down. Goff has led the Lions to their first playoff berth since 2016. In addition, Detroit won its first division title since 1993.

On the flip side, McVay worked closely with Goff for five seasons so he knows what his strengths and weaknesses are. As fans, we can expect a highly competitive contest between these NFC powerhouses.
