The Chargers fans sighed a huge breath of relief on Wednesday when Justin Herbert didn't appear on the injury report for their Week 1 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. The star quarterback was nursing a foot injury over the summer and the team diagnosed it as a plantar fascia injury. He was wearing a walking boot for two weeks before returning to practice on August 19.

Even though Herbert is ready to go on Sunday, his latest remarks should give Chargers fans a pause ahead of the 2024 NFL season. In a press conference on Wednesday, Herbert said that he will be managing the injury throughout the season, including rehabbing and icing, according to Daniel Popper of The Athletic.

NFL News: Justin Herbert to Manage Injury During the Season

This could potentially be concerning for the Bolts. Plantar fascia is a nagging injury that could worsen over time, even creating a risk of plantar rupture. After every game, there will likely be swelling and inflammation that will be painful.

This is obviously not what fans wanted to hear before a new season. Under Jim Harbaugh, the Chargers are hoping to take a significant step forward with a fully healthy Justin Herbert. The fifth-year quarterback ended his season early last year after he suffered a finger injury. A repeat of that could be disastrous for Los Angeles.

The Chargers have one of the most questionable QB2 situations in the league. Taylor Heinicke or Easton Stick would take over if Herbert were to go down and that is potentially a recipe for disaster. Hopefully, the Bolts can avoid the worst-case scenario and are able to deal with their star's injury without a serious flare-up.
