Rams running back Kyren Williams is fresh off a breakout season in which he rushed for over 1,100 yards and 12 TDs, but he’s not thinking selfishly about this upcoming season.

Williams said he was ‘super excited’ the team drafted former Michigan running back Blake Corum, even though some players might take that as a slight or a threat to their status.

“(He's) somebody that can run the ball very well and hopefully it allows me to get to the slot or run routes out of the backfield to showcase my skills," Williams told NFL.com this week.

Addition of Corum Should Make Life Easier on Williams

We shouldn’t give Williams too much credit for his selflessness, because the addition of Corum could make his game even better.

As Williams said, having Corum in the backfield could allow him to become more of a pass-catcher this season – something that could go a long way in helping him become the No. 1 running back in fantasy football, especially in PPR leagues.

"You know, I'm always going for that No. 1 spot," Williams said when told he was projected to be the fourth-best running back in terms of fantasy football production. "I don't like to be anything else (if) not number one. If you're not first, you're last. So, I'm going to continue to work."

And it’s not as if Corum is expected to be a huge contributor right out of the gate.

For reference, Corum is projected to be drafted 116th overall as the 37th RB off the board by FantasyPros. Williams, meanwhile, is projected No. 17 overall as the No. 7 RB.

From a team perspective, adding a running back was a necessity.

Williams only played in 12 games last season and there was virtually no rushing attack without him. Royce Freeman had the second-most rushing yards on the team (77 rushes for 319 yards) and he’s currently fighting for a roster spot in Dallas.

Other than Williams, Ronnie Rivers (32 rushes for 129 yards) is the only returning running back who had more than 100 rushing yards last season.

But even though Williams seems happy Corum is in LA, he might have to watch his back.

The former Wolverine was one of the best running backs in college football the past two years – rushing for over 2,700 yards and 45 TDs in his final two seasons at Michigan.

One of these two is bound to have a strong season.
