NBA free agency hasn’t been kind to the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason as they’ve missed out on several players that would’ve been tremendous additions to their roster. Klay Thompson, Buddy Hield, and Gary Trent Jr. were some of the names connected to the Lakers but decided to play elsewhere.

With Los Angeles missing out on those players, the Lakers needed to strike gold on possibly adding lower-tier free agents. However, that hasn’t happened yet and the Lakers saw one of their free agents leave to return to his old squad.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Monday that Spencer Dinwiddie agreed on a one-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks. The former Lakers guard played with the Mavericks in parts of the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

The 31-year-old Dinwiddie joined the Lakers a couple of days after the trade deadline this past season. The veteran guard was traded by the Brooklyn Nets to the Toronto Raptors at the deadline and subsequently waived.

Dinwiddie didn’t do much in his short stint with the Lakers, averaging 6.8 points, 2.4 assists, and 1.7 rebounds in 24.2 minutes per game (28 games).

Sadly, that trend continued in the playoffs as the veteran guard was a non-factor in the Lakers’ first-round matchup against the Denver Nuggets. Dinwiddie averaged a disappointing 3.0 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 rebounds in 14.6 minutes per game.

With Dinwiddie officially not returning, the Lakers must find another veteran depth on a veteran minimum that could spell D’Angelo Russell and Gabe Vincent.
