Lakers Sign Surprise Guard to Deal Ahead of Training Camp
This is the last month off for players in the NBA before things begin to pick up. Media day for the Lakers starts on Sept. 30 with training camp beginning on Oct. 1.
The Lakers didn't make many moves this offseason in terms of adding talent. They re-signed LeBron James and drafted Bronny James and Dalton Knecht in the 2024 NBA Draft back in June.
Now that training camp is on the horizon, the Lakers decided to sign a guard.
Lakers News: Los Angeles Added Jordan Goodwin
According to Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes, the Lakers have signed guard Jordan Goodwin to a camp deal.
Goodwin entered the NBA in 2021 as an undrafted free agent and played with the Washington Wizards, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies. The Saint Louis product is an athletic force who plays hard-nosed defense and is at his best offensively when he's attacking the rim.
In 17 games with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2023-24 season, Goodwin averaged a career-best 10 points, eight rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game.
Despite those numbers, an area where he needs to improve is his perimeter shooting. In his career, he shoots 30% from beyond the arc but that mark may not be good enough to make the roster.
LeBron is at his best when he's surrounded by players who can thrive off the ball and space the floor as shooters.
Training camp is the place to showcase his skills as the Lakers already like what they've seen on tape. If he continues to impress, he can carve out a roster spot for the 2024-25 campaign.
