As he enters his age-40 season, LeBron James has naturally begun thinking about his post-NBA life. After signing a two-year contract with a player option for next year this summer, James likely has another couple of years at best in the NBA. Therefore, he has been addressing what he plans to do post-retirement.

Speaking to Craig Melvin in an interview with TODAY, James discussed his looming retirement and his legacy afterward.

"I hope it’s not just talking about basketball. You know, for me, what I do in our community and the people that I inspire all over the world is what I want my — a lot of my legacy to be talked about... But if my legacy is only talking about the game of basketball, then I failed in my mission, so — we’ll see."

LeBron James on retirement

This is fascinating to hear from a man who has been the biggest icon of basketball in the last two decades. Can someone who has been synonymous with the NBA for over 20 years really be known for anything else?

James certainly thinks so. He has ambitions to be bigger than basketball and make a more lasting impact around the world.

He will presumably be involved in a lot of different non-basketball activities. However, he has previously made clear his intentions to own an NBA team one day. For someone as competitive and ambitious as LeBron, it will be hard to turn down an opportunity like that, regardless of how much he wants to build a non-basketball legacy.
