Rams Dream Offseason Target Just Became a Free Agent
By Cem Yolbulan
The Los Angeles Rams are in an ideal spot heading into free agency. One of the most pleasant surprises of the 2023 season, the Rams not only have a young, talented roster that could contend in the present, but they also have plenty of cap space to bolster their chances. Unlike the last few offseasons, the Rams have over $40 million in cap space that will help them be active players on the open market.
One of the Rams' immediate needs is on the defensive backfield. Former defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, now the Falcons head coach, did an excellent job getting the most out of a limited group. However, the pass defense still needs improvement despite punching above their weight last season.
This need is further exacerbated by the potential departures at the safety position. John Johnson III and Jordan Fuller, two of the starters at safety, are hitting free agency, leaving an already-weak unit in a desperate situation.
This is where Xavier McKinney comes in.
Giants Safety Xavier McKinney is the Perfect Rams Free Agent Target
The Giants' star safety is hitting the open market after New York failed to franchise or transition tag him. The 24-year-old was the fourth-highest graded safety in 2023 on PFF and would be a huge signing in Los Angeles.
McKinney played every game and every snap last season, finishing with 116 tackles, 11 passes defended, and three interceptions. He will likely require a top-of-the-market contract over $15 million annual average salary.
Considering his age and production in the first four years of his career, McKinney is likely worth that sort of a deal. He should be at the top of the Rams' free-agent targets list.
