After an overachieving 2023 campaign which saw the Rams make the postseason contrary to expectations, Los Angeles is trying to take another step forward in 2024. Sean McVay & Co. has the talent and depth on both ends of the ball to make a deep postseason run.

In order to do that, they need to start the season on the right foot. However, they have an uphill battle against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year.

In Week 1, the Rams are visiting Detroit to face the Lions in a rematch of last season's NFC Wild Card round, when they lost to the Lions 24-23.

FanDuel Sportsbook expects a similar result but with more scoring. The opening odds for the matchup have the Lions as 3.5-point favorites at home. More interestingly, however, the total is set at over/under 51.5 points, the highest mark among all 16 games.

Rams vs. Lions Week 1 Opening Odds

  • Spread: Rams +3.5 (-115)/Lions -3.5 (-105)
  • Moneyline: Rams (+142)/Lions (-168)
  • Total: 51.5 (Over -110/Under -110)

This expectation for a shootout is certainly understandable. The Lions had one of the best offenses in the league last season, ranking third in yards per game (394.8). The Rams were also ranked in the top ten in the NFL in points and yards. On the other hand, both teams were in the bottom half of the league in defensive metrics.

Both teams owe their successes to their star quarterbacks. After these two teams traded Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford with one another, both organizations took a significant step forward, making the deal one of the rare truly win-win trades for both sides.

Since then, these teams have been closely connected with a lot of history between them. Dan Campbell and Jared Goff had the last laugh back in January, so the Week 1 matchup will be an excellent opportunity for the Rams to bounce back and get one over them.
