Recently Retired NBA Vet a ‘Leading’ Candidate for Lakers Coaching Job
Even though the 2023-24 season is still going on in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers are looking to build for next season.
After being bounced in the first round by the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles fired Darvin Ham on May 3 after two seasons with the team.
They also parted ways with the entire coaching staff and set their sights on completely reshaping their staff ahead of next season.
There are a few candidates that have come out as targets for Los Angeles and one recently retired player is at the top of the list.
Lakers News: JJ Redick Is A Top Target for the Lakers
According to Shams Charania, JJ Redick, Sam Cassell, and James Borrego are the initial targets for the vacant position as the Lakers will begin their formal interview process this week.
It has been reported that LeBron James would love to have Redick as the next Lakers coach. This duo has recently dropped a podcast called 'Mind The Game', which is a very intriguing show.
Redick played in the NBA for 15 seasons before retiring in 2021. After stepping away from the court, Redick has become one of the biggest faces in the national media for the NBA. The former Duke product joined Mike Breen and Doris Burke in February to form ESPN and ABC's lead NBA broadcast team.
As James is approaching the end of his career and could become a free agent this offseason, his influence will certainly be heard in the Lakers building. Redick and James have a great relationship, which definitely holds some weight as the Lakers hone in potential candidates.
If Los Angeles did make Redick the next head coach, it would be a risky move as the 39-year-old has no prior coaching experience.
