Surprise Mike Williams-Chargers Reunion Rumor Emerges
The Los Angeles Chargers significantly shook up their wide receiver room in the middle of free agency rush last week, opting to not only release Mike Williams but also trade Keenan Allen to the Chicago Bears.
This group is now in major need of talent, and while the No. 5 pick will likely be used on one of this draft's top wideouts, that won't totally solve this problem.
As a result, it turns out a Williams reunion is one path the Chargers are considering this offseason.
Chargers Rumors: Mike Williams Reunion Still on the Table
ESPN's Adam Schefter provided insight on Sunday night around Williams' free-agent recruitment. While pointing out the big-bodied pass-catcher has meetings set with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers, Schefter noted Los Angeles is "interested in bringing back" Williams.
This news does come as a bit of a surprise. After all, the team releasing Williams signaled they were more than comfortable being without his services. No one blames them for that choice, especially considering the cap savings that came with it, but it is the reality.
Yet, the team appears to have some hope Williams isn't taking things personally by signaling their interest.
A reunion between these sides would make sense if Williams doesn't hold any hard feelings. The Jets are a mess waiting to happen, the Panthers have a young QB who struggled as a rookie, and the Steelers are banking on a washed-up Russell Wilson to save them.
Meanwhile, Williams could return to a very familiar setting to serve as the top target for an elite quarterback in Justin Herbet. The departure of Allen frees up a ton of looks to go Williams' way, which could help him bounce back in a major way following his torn ACL and cash in as a free agent next offseason.
A reunion doesn't seem likely with other teams swirling and Williams probably open to a new change of scenery, but there's no denying the Chargers present an attractive opportunity even after his release.
