Rams Cut Ties With 4 Players Immediately After Playoff Loss
The Los Angeles Rams 2024 season officially ended Sunday with a 28-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round. Thus, the team's 2025 offseason has begun.
Although players like Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford's respective futures with the Rams remain in question entering the offseason, others have assurances they will be with the team going into minicamp and training camp next year. According to the Ram official X page, the team signed 13 players to reserve/future contracts.
However, they did not extend the same offers to four players: tight end Nikola Kalinic, running back Royce Freeman, defensive tackle Kevin Strong, and linebacker Rashad Weaver.
The players the Rams signed include offensive lineman AJ Arcuri., wide receiver Quintez Cephus, inside linebacker Tony Fields II, cornerback A.J. Green, defensive tackle Jack Heflin, safety Tanner Ingle, cornerback Shaun Jolly, cornerback Cam Lampkin, inside linebacker Elias Neal, defensive tackle David Olajiga, wide receiver Drake Stoops, outside linebacker Keir Thomas and cornerback Charles Woods.
Rams News: Rams Don't Re-Sign Four Practice Squad Players
Although many fans likely expect teams to only retain the rookies off their practice squads after the season is over, that is not what typically happens. In this case, the Rams did sign all six rookies from their practice squad, but they also retained seven veterans or players with 2/3 years of experience.
Retaining those veterans may seem pointless since they were on the practice squad anyway. Logically, Los Angeles would have a chance to bring them back before the start of next season, given that it seems other teams didn't want them this season.
That said, that's not how player acquistion and roster needs work in the NFL. So, if the Rams valued having those veterans on their practice squad this year offering them reserve/future contracts was the right move.
Even though the likelihood of any of these players seeing increased playing time next season remains low, one of the receivers that signed a reserve/future contract could have an opportunity, given that Kupp may not be with the Rams next season.
For Kalinic, Freeman, Strong, and Weaver, they'll now hope to find new opportunities elsewhere around the NFL.
