Sean McVay Addresses Rams Coaxing Aaron Donald Out of Retirement
The Los Angeles Rams are currently in first place in the NFC West with an 8-6 record. This comes after being sub-500 in the first five games for the second year in a row. Despite the Rams' improvement throughout the season, their defense still misses Aaron Donald.
Earlier this week, the media asked head coach Sean McVay about the possibility of calling Donald to bring him out of retirement. McVay responded, "I would almost feel disrespectful reaching out to him, just based on the principles and knowing him the way that I do. If that was something that he got interested in, then that would obviously be something that you’re always open to.", according to Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.
Rams News: Sean McVay shoots down possibility of asking Aaron Donald to come out of retirement
McVay's response to this question is the only correct one. Although Donald was part of the Rams before McVay, the two spent seven seasons together. The time not only allows a coach to understand how a player acts on the field but it allows them to develop a relationship with them off the field as well.
Clearly, McVay respects Donald as both a player and a person and doesn't feel comfortable making that call. Yet, if Donald came to McVay and said he wanted to come back, McVay would be an idiot to refuse.
So far this season without Donald, the Rams have recorded 44 sacks. Currently, second-year player Kolbie Turner leads the team in sacks with seven. At the same time, rookies Braden Fiske (6) and Jared Verse (4.5) have also been key contributors. Both Fiske and Verse were also at the top among rookies in pressures at one point this season.
While having a dominant presence like Donald back would only help, the Rams seem to have found promising successors to Donald.
