Sean McVay Now at Risk of Losing Another Rams Coach
Ever since becoming the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017, Sean McVay has developed quite the coaching tree. McVay's disciples include Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, and former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, just to name a few.
That said, McVay's coaching tree could make its presence felt again in the offseason. According to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers X (formerly Twitter) account, they have interviewed three coaches from the Rams 2024 coaching staff for their offensive coordinator vacancy. The list goes as follows: offensive assistant/pass game specialist Nate Scheelhaase, tight ends coach/pass game coordinator Nick Caley, and quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone.
Rams QB Coach Dave Ragone Interviews to Become Buccaneers OC
Scheelhaase joined Los Angeles as an offensive assistant/pass game specialist in 2024. Prior to joining the Rams, he spent nine seasons in college football, three with the University of Illinois and six with Iowa State. This season, the Rams had the tenth-best passing attack with 4,096 yards with Scheelhaase's help. Although how much influence he had on Los Angeles's offense is unknown, being a part of that potent passing attack helps his case.
Caley has been the Rams' tight ends coach since 2023 but has been in the NFL coaching ranks for a while. Before joining the Rams, Caley spent seven seasons (2015-2022) with the New England Patriots. During that time, he was everything from a position coach (tight ends and fullbacks) to an offensive assistant.
Since Caley joined the Rams, the tight ends have faded away from the Ram's offensive plan. The best season a tight end had under Caley was in 2023, when Tyler Higbee had 495 yards and two touchdowns. Yet, like Scheelhaase, Caley was a part of Los Angeles's passing game plans this season.
Ragone was hired as the Rams quarterbacks coach in 2024. Preceding his time in Los Angeles, Ragone had many jobs within the NFL coaching staff, but his most important one was as the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator from 2021-2023.
During that span, the Falcons' offense mightily struggled for many reasons, including poor quarterback play. There is every possibility that if Ragone receives the Buccaneers' OC job, he might have a better chance for success, given Baker Mayfield is an upgrade at quarterback.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if any of these Rams coaches become Tampa Bay's next offensive coordinator.
