Sean McVay Teases Contract Extension for Rams Star in the Offseason
By Cem Yolbulan
After exceeding expectations and making it to the divisional round of the playoffs again, the Los Angeles Rams are entering a crucial offseason. With futures of key players like Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp up in the air, GM Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay have to make important decisions to help get the Rams back to Super Bowl contention.
The Rams are projected to have over $37 million in cap space per Pro Football Focus. This gives them an opportunity to be active in free agency to improve the roster.
At the same time, they have contract extension negotiations that they need to take care of first. Star running back Kyren Williams is one of those situations.
Williams is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract in 2025. He has established himself as one of the better young running backs in the league, making the Pro Bowl in 2023 and having the best season of his career with 1,299 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in 2024.
Considering how big of a loss it would be for the Rams to let Williams walk next offseason, the team is not willing to play the free agency game. In his presser on Thursday, Sean McVay revealed their desire to sign Williams to an extension, per USA Today's Cameron DaSilva.
"I think that’s something that definitely would be of a discussion... I’m really proud of the body of work that Kyren has put together, what he represents, and all the different things that we really want to be about as a football team. He’s checking a lot of those boxes. I think that’s certainly something that will be discussed as well."

Les Snead confirmed the Rams' interest in retaining Williams and teased the potential start of negotiations this offseason.
Williams already has a raise kicking in next season through the Proven Performance Escalator, thanks to making the Pro Bowl already. He is set to make over $5 million in 2025. The Rams could bump that number up and potentially get a discount in the following years. Whether Williams' extension will hit an annual salary of eight figures remains to be seen but it looks like his big payday is coming soon.
