The Los Angeles Rams continue to be one of the franchises that NFL teams go to improve their offense. Sean McVay is one of the most innovative minds of the last decade and his coaching tree has produced multiple head coaches including Kevin O’Connell of the Minnesota Vikings, Zac Taylor of the Cincinnati Bengals and Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers.

The tree has extended to the Jacksonville Jaguars who hired Liam Cohen as their new head coach last week. A former assistant and offensive coordinator under McVay in Los Angeles, Cohen is looking to assemble his new staff in Jacksonville and it could bring another McVay assistant to one of the NFL’s failing franchises.

Rams’ Nate Scheelhaase Emerges as Leading Candidate for Jaguars Offensive Coordinator Job

According to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Rams offensive assistant/passing game specialist Nate Scheelhase has emerged as the leading candidate for the Jaguars offensive coordinator job. Wilson went on to state that several NFL sources predict he will be hired, helping Cohen fill one of his biggest roles.

Scheelhaase has an expansive resume beginning as a second-team quarterback at Illinois during his collegiate career. He began his coaching career with his alma mater before joining the Iowa State staff as a running backs coach in 2018 and worked his way up the ladder to become the Cyclones’ offensive coordinator in 2023.

Scheelhaase left to become the Rams passing game coordinator last season and got a front-row seat working with McVay and quarterback Matthew Stafford. While Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua missed time earlier in the season, Stafford took off with his top targets on the field, throwing for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

There will be a bigger challenge in Jacksonville. While Scheelhaase will be able to work with another former No. 1 overall pick in Trevor Lawrence, he’s struggled to find his footing with the Jaguars, throwing for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions under Doug Pedersen last season.

The Jaguars are also short on weapons but do have promising receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who caught 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns during his rookie season.

Part of this is life for an NFL coach, who constantly must adjust and adapt their staff as coaches take bigger and better jobs. But it’s a more common occurrence for McVay, who has become the father figure for a plethora of offensive coaches.
