After a hot 3-0 start, the Los Angeles Lakers came back to earth. During their five-game road trip that concluded with a loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night, the Lakers went 1-4 to fall to .500 for the season. Blowout losses to the Cavs, Pistons, and the Grizzlies were particularly concerning and they have finally taken a toll on head coach JJ Redick.

Following the game in Memphis, the first-time head coach was furious with his team. Per Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Redick singled out starting point guard D'Angelo Russell for his "level of competition" and "attention to detail." He added that he didn't like how Russell went back to old habits, causing him to be replaced by a better defender in Gabe Vincent.

Lakers News: JJ Redick Unhappy With D'Angelo Russell's Effort Level

For Lakers fans who are privy to the D'Angelo Russell experience, this is not surprising. The former All-Star guard tends to have good stretches that fool coaches, media, and fans before going back to his low effort, questionable shot selection, and poor defensive intensity self.

The issue this time is he didn't even have a good stretch to start the season. Through eight games this season, he is shooting 37.5% from the field and 29.2% from downtown, averaging 12 points and 5.8 assists in 30 minutes.

After picking up his player option for this season, Russell is now on an expiring deal. His expiring $18.6 million salary is the perfect trade chip for the Lakers, but he needs to play better to become a more appealing option for the team willing to take him in.

The Lakers are in a tough position since they desperately need Russell because of their lack of depth and talent. Without DLo, they don't have enough passing, shooting, and creation, putting Redick in a bind. How Redick does in his first big challenge as a head coach will be fascinating to watch.
