The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a terrible 40-17 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, which put a small dent in their playoff hopes. The Chargers (8-6) are still the seventh seed in the AFC but are one game behind the Baltimore Ravens (9-5) and Denver Broncos (9-5).

Los Angeles will have a chance to move up to the sixth seed with a win over the Broncos on Thursday Night Football to kick off Week 16.

That said, the Chargers are already back at practice this week and received some good news on the injury front. On Tuesday, ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported Los Angeles opened up the 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve for veteran tight end Hayden Hurst.

The 31-year-old pass-catcher has been out since Week 10 because of a hip injury, so getting him back at this point of the season is right on time. Los Angeles will have three weeks to add Hurst to the 53-man roster or put him on injured reserve for the rest of the year.

Without Hurst on the field, the Chargers leaned more on Will Dissly, who played well for several weeks before missing last week’s game due to a shoulder injury.

Before Hurst was placed on injured reserve, he didn’t do much in LA’s passing game. The vet pass catcher logged seven receptions (12 targets) for 65 yards in seven games.

The veteran tight end signed a one-year deal in free agency with the Chargers after spending the 2023 campaign with the Carolina Panthers.

Since he just had his practice window open and the Chargers are on a short week, it’s unlikely Hurst will play on Thursday night.

However, with two games left after their Week 16 matchup against Denver, Hurst could have a chance to get back on the field.
