Ricky Town Transfers From USC

Ricky Town’s long pursuit as a USC Trojans commit ends with one week of practice as a player.

One week of fall camp was all that it took for 4-star recruit Ricky Town to opt his way out of Los Angeles. He never even made it to the Cardinal and Gold game, thus, the long pursuit for Ricky Town resulted….in nothing.

Ricky Town chose to transfer from USC Sunday evening to likely red shirt this fall season and play elsewhere in fall 2016. Having enrolled early at USC in the spring, Town will be eligible to sit out at his new school, once enrolled in fall semester, and able to play next fall.

“He’s worked extremely hard, he’s been a great member of our program and I’m sure wherever he decides to go,” Head coach Steve Sarkisian told the L.A. Times.  “He’ll be a good member of that program as well.”

Town was once the number 3 quarterback on the USC depth chart behind Cody Kessler and Max Browne. However, fellow QB commit Sam Darnold begun to thrive in camp, and Ricky Town….rumored not so much.

With Jalen Greene already making the positional change from quarterback to wide receiver, Sam Darnold proving to be a solid qb, and USC’s history of success of landing top quarterback recruits, the writing was on the wall.

It’s a gift and a curse for USC.  Landing great recruits will undoubtedly and inevitably force the hand of some to transfer to seek playing time and opportunity elsewhere.

Some may call it sour grapes of entitlement, but whatever the case, someone had to go.

The unfortunate part now exists that the Trojans don’t have an abundance of quarterback commits in lieu outside of Glendora, Ca. quarterback Matt Fink, a 4-star commit, the only 2016 QB commit.

Max Browne is the obvious choice to take the helm at quarterback in the 2016 season and likely the 2017 season as well. With true freshman Sam Darnold in the fold, barring injury, the Trojans may not necessarily need a signal caller until 2018-19.

But, it goes without saying that USC will undoubtedly land some top 10 ranked in the nation talent who will compete, regardless. Commits leaving the land of Troy when competition gets thick is not at all an anamally for USC fans.

For USC, Ricky Town’s transfer just emphasizes the importance of quarterback depth among “the haves.”

Sometimes being among the top high school names in the country simply isn’t enough to make it on the collegiate level at some programs. USC being one of those programs.

What’s next for Ricky Town? The rumors indicate Florida. However, the reason Town decommited from Alabama was to play football closer to his hometown of Ventura, California.

Thus, could it be feasible that Town lands at another school in the Pac-12?
