UCLA Proving Doubters Wrong
By Pablo Jacobo
Not bad for team that had no business being in the tournament right? The UCLA Bruins ended their season with a solid but unconvincing 21-13 record. In surprising fashion, they got into the tournament. But that’s neither here nor there.

The madness began with the Bruins upsetting 6th seeded SMU 60-59 in a controversial goal-tending call. Fast-forward to Saturday and UCLA steamrolled past UAB to move on to the Sweet Sixteen. UCLA handedly won the game 92-75.
UCLA completely dominated the paint against UAB. A whopping 50 points in the paint. Tony Parker established his presence early on in the contest. He finished the game with a career-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. At the half, Parker had 20 points and 6 rebounds. Kevan Looney contributed a double-double (10 points 11 rebounds) as well.

Bryce Alford came down to reality. He contributed 22 points and 5 assists. Fresh off his 9-11 performance, Alford displayed an all-around game. UAB sent defenders at him hard trying to keep him from getting open looks. Alford showed great poise and intelligence by driving to the basket and feeding his big men for easy scores. As the game transpired his looks got easier.
We must show some love to guards Norman Powell and Isaac Hamilton. Both guards were solid on defense and offense. Between them they went for a combined 11-16 (28 points), 10 rebounds and 8 assists. If both Powell and Hamilton continue their strong play, UCLA can be a very dangerous squad.
UCLA finished the game with five players in double figures. Last game, it was their guard play that helped them advance. Saturday’s victory showed the Bruins’ versatility by dominating the game with their inside game. The balance the team is showing early on in the tournament will be key for them to keep proving doubters wrong.

A convincing performance by UCLA to advance to the next round. The team shot an impressive 60-percent from the field. They made over half of their 3-point shots. They are showing the naysayers they can win with an inside or outside game. If they continue getting a balanced box score, they will be a tough play for anyone. They await the winner of Iowa and Gonzaga.
UCLA is proving doubters that it doesn’t matter how you get in but rather what you do when you’re in. In two games, the Bruins have played very well. It’s clear this is not the same inconsistent team from the regular season. This is an inspired roster.
