Los Angeles Dodgers Let The Bats Do The Talking

Today was an amazing day for baseball as the bright California sun glared over Chavez Ravine, bringing temperatures to a hot seventy degrees.

The Dodgers are one of the hottest teams in the National League right now with a winning streak of seven games, along with back-to-back series sweeps against the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies, but this isn’t the only streak the Dodgers are on, right now.

The Dodgers have two other streaks going on, as the Dodgers have beaten the Rockies at home in the last nine meetings, and have a current home win streak of six games.

The Dodgers last home winning streak with two back-to-back series sweeps, was in 2013 when the Dodgers played three game series against the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Mets (6-game home winning streak).

As the Dodgers entered today’s game for a chance for another sweep. The Dodgers bats continued to produce early, as again the Dodgers got on the board in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the second inning, The Dodgers got on the board first. As Scott Van Slyke hit a blooper to left field for a double to score in Howie Kendrick from first base for the first run of the game. On the following at bat, young Joc Pederson hit another blooper down the left field line, for a double as Scott Van Slyke reached home safely to increase the dodgers lead to two.

With the lead still at two, the Dodgers had a big opportunity to increase their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as the Dodgers loaded the bases for the RBI machine, Adrian Gonzalez. Unfortunately, the RBI machine, who was riding a 13-game hitting streak, was unable to bring in any runs, as he popped out to foul ground in between third base and home.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Rockies began their comeback, as the Rockies led off with a walk to Rafael Ynoa, and a single by Charlie Blackmon, to put men on the corners, for the heart of the Rockies lineup coming up to bat with no outs.

Gratefully, McCarthy and the Dodgers were able to get out of the jam. As, Carlos Gonzalez popped out to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, which kept men at the corners with one out. With Troy Tulowitzki coming up to bat, I know everyone watching (if you have TWC Sportsnet LA) the game got that nervous chill in their stomach, waiting for the Rockies to get on the board as Tulo has owned the Dodgers with the bat. Happily, that didn’t happen as Tulowitzki grounded into a close 1-6–3 double play.

With the momentum the Dodgers got out of getting out of the jam, showed up as the Dodgers exploded with a leadoff HR from Howie Kendrick, a ball blasted to left field for a two-run homer from Scott Van Slyke, and a ball smoked to right from Joc Pederson, but the fun didn’t end there. With no outs still in the bottom of the sixth, A.J. Ellis whacked the ball to deep left field for a stand up double. Which was followed up by back-to-back outs by Alex Guerrero and Jimmy Rollins.

Turner on the following at bat, brought in Ellis from third off of a deep single to left field, which ended up being the last run of the game, as Gonzalez smacked a deep ball to right field, only to be caught on the warning track in right field to end the inning (Adrian Gonzalez went 0-5).

In the top of the seventh inning, the Dodgers brought in Adam Liberatore to replace Brandon McCarthy, who had an exceptional game going six total innings, striking out six, walking two, and allowing only three hits.

Adam Liberatore, came into the game retiring the next six batters he faced, striking out two, and having four grounding out.

The Dodgers then brought in Juan Nicasio, to close the game in the top of the ninth. Nicasio started the inning, with a leadoff hit from Charlie Blackmon, who responded with striking out the next batter he saw, and getting the last two of the three batters to pop out.

The Dodgers bullpen gave up only one hit, one walk and striking out three of the last ten batters.

WP: McCarthy (2-0)

LP: Butler (1-1)

If the Dodgers can continue the offense and exceptional pitching, they will not have any trouble continuing their winning streak, which couldn’t come at a better time.

The Dodgers can widen their lead against the rest of the NL West, as they head to San Francisco (5th in the West), and San Diego (2nd in the West), for a three games series against both.
