Tim Tebow To Eagles, What It Means For Ex-Trojan Stars

NOT AGAIN!? As Jay Glazer Reports Tim Tebow will sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. Mark Sanchez must be beside himself. While this is the second time that the former USC quarterback will be dealt the Tebow draw, many USC fans must be wondering where this leaves Eagles backup QB Matt Barkley.

More from LA Sports Hub

Though it may be painful to admit, the former USC quarterback has been a disappointment since Philadelphia took him in the 4th round of the 2013 NFL Draft. So what does the signing of Tim Tebow mean for the pair of USC stars?

To be honest Mark Sanchez has nothing to worry about. With the Jets, Sanchez easily out played Tebow for the starting QB position. Sports Nation polls will tell you the only QB on the roster with a playoff win since 2011 is Tim Tebow. They conveniently omit that Mark Sanchez has four career playoff wins and an AFC title game appearance. Mark has beaten Tebow before in an open competition (not that there currently is one). After his play last season Mark has certainly proved himself worthy of being the Starting QB. So while there are certainly naysayers, Sanchez should enter fall no lower than the second spot if not the starter in Philly.

  • Meanwhile Matt Barkley may very well have his work cut out for him. He certainly hasn’t had much if any success in his first 2 seasons as a pro. The only real playing time he’s seen came weeks 7 and 8 of his first season. Against division rivals Dallas and the NY Giants he went a combined 28-46 for 287 yards 0 TD’s and 4 interceptions. Needless to say the Eagles lost both of those games and Barkley really hasn’t been seen much since.

The news that the Eagles will sign Tebow may very well put Matt between a rock and a hard place. He will surely be given the chance to compete for a spot on the roster and this move may push him to become a better pro quarterback. But as we know Matt will be competing not just with Tim but with “Tebow Mania” as-well. In fairness to Matt, it’s not as if Tim Tebow has played a single down of real football in a year so there’s that.

Look for these two former college stars to battle it out in OTA’s and possibly minicamp. But if Barkley isn’t able to beat out Tebow it seems that this move will lead to one of 2 realistic possibilities. The first being the Eagles trade him. Chip Kelly has been no stranger to trades and Barkley could be a project for a team that is already set at the position.

Or the Eagles could cut him. This scenario seems unlikely given the Eagles would have to take a slight cap hit. It would also be an admission to failing with another draft pick on top of the Marcus Smith pick last year. Whatever happens, we wish both Matt and Mark success moving forward. Fight On!
