Top UCLA Recruit Arrested On Multiple Charges
Sotonye Jamabo, a five-star recruit that recently committed to UCLA was arrested Sunday morning on multiple charges. According to the Los Angeles Times, Jamabo was charged with minor in possession of alcohol, minor consumption of alcohol, operating a vehicle without a license… the list goes on.
It was said that police believe that Jamabo had attended his high school prom the night before. To be realistic, Prom and alcohol go hand in hand. We all went through high school, it is just reality. It will be interesting to see how head coach Jim Mora handles this situation. Coach Mora is a no-nonsense type of guy, and he is known to make examples of his players if they get out of line.

According to the report, UCLA officials are aware of the situation. It would be smart for UCLA to let the legal process play out. Jamabo is a 18-year-old kid who made a mistake, granted this is a fairly large mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. It would be terrible for young Soso Jamabo to ruin a golden opportunity before it has even began. UCLA released a statement on the matter.
It has to be said that Jamabo has not yet enrolled in UCLA. It’s unclear if UCLA will have second thoughts about including the 18-year-old in their football program. I doubt it would come to that but he will surely be under the microscope from now on.

Jamabo was highly-rated and coveted by top football programs. I mean, why not? He was the No. 4 running back in the country and No. 22 player overall. As a senior for Plano West, Jamabo rushed for 2,200-plus yards and scored 44 touchdowns. A huge talent who no doubt will be an asset to the Bruin football team. It would truly be a shame if this kid, with such a bright future ahead of him, ruins his career over this situation. It would be unfair to criticize him for one incident. LA Daily News’ Jack Wang tweeted more details of Jamabo’s arrest.
Projected No. 1 pick Jameis Winston went through the majority of his college career with petty offenses. His draft stock may or may not affect his official status in the NFL Draft. I doubt Soso Jamabo wants to go through a similar experience. I hope this blows over quickly for Jamabo’s sake, as he would miss out on a huge opportunity to join an up-and-coming football program, education and a future NFL career.
