NFL To Los Angeles Imminent? Carson Stadium Approved
Potentially Huge news for NFL fans here in Southern California. According to Nathan Fenno of the LA Times, the Carson City Council has unanimously approved a $1.7 Billion Stadium for the Chargers and Raiders. This comes despite an earlier City commission report which suggested the proposal “lacks any detailed site plans”. Clearly this decision is the most significant development in a quest for Los Angeles to once again call an NFL Franchise Home.
There are really 3 things we can take away from such a report.
The first is Carson may very well be the future home of not one but TWO NFL teams as soon as the 2016-17 NFL season. Though many including myself thought the idea of two AFC teams, in the same division no less, sharing a stadium was unlikely at best. It seems that those doubters may well be proven wrong. But could this proposal truly work? Aside from the scheduling nightmare it would create for the NFL, there were many other problems the City’s commission report alluded to. This would include the proposed capacity of roughly 70,000 people, but a mere 10,000 onsite parking spaces to accommodate them. You do the math… there is no way that the average vehicle will bring seven fans to the stadium. Obviously traffic would be a whole different animal as well.

My second take away is how this will affect the other Stadium proposals. Surely Ed Roski will have something to say about this, whether he drops his proposal or attempts to further it. The City of Industry proposal has always been considered a bit of a long shot. Will this development knock Mr. Roski out of contention so to speak, or could it possibly up the ante. Don’t forget about Rams owner Stan Kroenke. Kroenke owns the Hollywood park area and, supposedly had a much more detailed plan which took into account both parking and specific stadium design details. Surely an owner, more importantly a business man, of his stature wouldn’t invest so heavily in an endeavor which he did not intend to see through. Most importantly, Kroenke has the money to invest in a Los Angeles stadium WITHOUT a second franchise. What transpires next here should be very interesting.

Finally the most pressing issue is how this will affect the upcoming NFL Draft now barely more than a week away. Let us not forget the Chargers face the very real possibility of Phillip Rivers refusing to sign an extension or a new contract should the team move to Los Angeles. The quarterback has stated quite plainly he has no intention of moving his family to Los Angeles and would not play in the City. So will this news be enough for him to officially declare this season his last as a Charger?
There has already been speculation the Chargers may try to trade with Tennessee (where Rivers grew up) for a certain Heisman trophy quarterback out of Oregon. Could this be the final tell, to the NFL return to L.A. saga? We may get our answer as soon as next Thursday night. If the Chargers make the move to trade up for Mariotta (or Winston if things really get crazy) that would certainly seem to signal an imminent relocation of the franchise. So take a deep breath my friends, we may know as soon as Thursday whether the NFL will have a franchise(s) where it belongs… Back in Los Angeles.
