Lots Has Been Going On With The Angels Lately, And It Might Be A Good Thing

To Weave, or Not To Weave — That is the Question

Weaver is winless in his first five starts in 2015. That’s a first for his career. Perhaps he could have at least two wins. But his 5.83 ERA right now is the biggest culprit. With a fastball clocked at about 83 MPH, many have concerns. Some are even saying he’s finished. Well, if he was really done, he would not have managed to pitch seven innings.

Five of those seven innings were scoreless. And the first inning was a five run nightmare. This is something that has happened in three of Weaver’s five starts. He’s suffering from what I call ‘one bad inning syndrome’.
In three of Weaver’s five starts, he’s pitched well enough to win. A total of 7 earned runs in 18 innings, which is a 3.50 ERA. In the other two starts, against the Royals and A’s, he’s had a five run inning in each that has inflated his ERA to 5.83.

So it’s basically two terrible innings out of 29 1/3 that has destroyed Weaver’s ERA. That, and the fact that he managed to go seven innings last night, are evidence that he is not done.
So if Weaver can clean up that one bad inning, then it would make a huge difference. And it would if he was able to do that already. A lot of his rates have gone up, with his strikeout rate falling. But what’s interesting is that he’s only walked four batters so far. So the command is still there.
Weaver has made a career out of defying the naysayers. That could very well happen again as the season progresses. The sample size is way too small to get accurate read on what kind of season Weaver will actually have. As of right now, it’s not looking good.
But again, the numbers in each of his starts individually well tell us that all he needs to do is clean up that one bad inning.
