Rams Current Roster Moves Should Excite NFL To LA Fans

In a three-part series from LA Sports Hub, we will examine which of the three rumored NFL teams should pump up Los Angeles fans. The trio of teams include the St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. We will take a look at the current roster, draft prospects, and brief history as all three candidates spent time in Los Angeles. First up, the St. Louis Rams or possibly LA Rams.

In recent months Stan Kroenke, owner of the St. Louis Rams, has been busy designing a new NFL stadium in Inglewood. The Inglewood City Council has approved the plan for the new stadium in hopes of bringing back the NFL to Los Angeles for the first time in two decades . I see the Rams as the best choice to call Los Angeles home once again. The roster that is being built at the moment has the potential to be a force to be reckoned with in the immediate future.

Looking back at the history of the Los Angeles Rams, they had much success here in L.A. In the 49-year history of the Rams franchise in L.A. the team won more games than they lost (376-317). Rams made the playoffs 21 times, won the division 14 times, made it to the NFL/NFC Championship 7, and got to play in one Super Bowl, where they lost to the Steelers 31-19. Their lone NFL Championship came in 1951, prior to the Super Bowl Era, which started after the 1966 NFL season . The L.A. Rams had put a winning football team that competed for a Super Bowl almost half the years they were here.

Now back to the current state of the Rams. It seems every year that the Rams are projected to finish last in the highly contested NFC West. But every year the Rams come out, win some games against harder teams, and are still in the playoff race as they enter December. Unfortunately, winning the tough games has not resulted in the Rams making the playoffs (Rams haven’t made them since 2004).

  • The Rams roster has some bright spots. The newly acquired QB Nick Foles is slowly becoming a top tier quarterback. In his three years, he has thrown 46 TD’s to only 17 interceptions. He is coming off a season where he suffered a broken collarbone, but he has turned the page and is looking to take the Rams to the next level. Foles has some nice weapons on the outside to throw too. To name a few, Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Brian Quick, even a veteran like Kenny Britt. Their receiving core has got speed to spread the field and let Foles dissect any defense.

When Foles doesn’t want to throw, all he has to do is turn around and hand it off to Tre Mason. Mason in his rookie year posted outstanding numbers. Since he started in week 6, he ran for 765 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Disgruntled RB Zac Stacy has been shipped off to the Jets and a potential franchise-altering back has been brought in. In Thursday’s NFL Draft, the Rams selected Todd Gurley, running back from the University of Georgia.  Gurley will add another element to pound the football against the tough defenses in the NFC West.

If the Rams are the team that migrates to LA, we know we will be getting one of the up-and-coming teams that step out on the gridiron with all that star power. The Rams certainly did everything in their power to beef-up their atrocious offensive line. They selected Andrew Donnal, Rob Havenstein, Jamon Brown and Cody Wichmann to open up lanes for their running backs Mason and Gurley. The rest of the Rams’ draft class can be seen on their official site.

There are a lot of NFL fans here in Los Angeles. I see no problem with the Rams not having a fan base out here. I have heard from many people (mostly friends) that if the NFL came back to LA, they would immediately root for that team. Fans love to see their teams win. It is hard for fans to spend their hard earned money on a team that doesn’t show any promise. Since 2008, the St. Louis Rams have averaged around 57,000 people in attendance. I can definitely see the new LA Rams’ fans bringing in more than that number.  People here in LA have been starving for football for 20 years now, and they will show their pride by rocking the blue and gold.

The Rams have drafted well over the past years with guys like Chris Long, Robert Quinn, Michael Brockers, Tavon Austin, Greg Robinson, and Greg Zuerlein (I know a kicker, but he is legit). Their front office has built a team that can win games and with some good offseason moves this year (Nick Foles and Nick Fairley), the Rams coming to LA would be the best option to see a successful team. The potential of the current roster is plentiful to get fans in LA excited. Nothing is set in stone in terms of a potential move, but reports arise seemingly every week.
