USC’s Nelson Agholor Flying High With The Eagles
USC’s Nelson Agholor was selected with the 20th pick in this year’s NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. I don’t think Agholor was too big of a reach for the Eagles. According to NFL.com, Agholor was projected as a second rounder. The Eagles needed to get some firepower back after this offseason saw the departure of LeSean McCoy and Jeremy Maclin, two of the most explosive players in the NFL. With the addition of DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews to replace McCoy, the running back situation is taken care of. With Riley Cooper and Jordan Matthews as the Eagles top two receivers, they needed to make a splash in this year’s draft.

In my opinion, Nelson Agholor can step into Chip Kelly’s fast paced offense and be a huge impact right away. The 21-year-old from Nigeria, jumped onto the scene at USC during his sophomore year playing for the Trojans. He posted 56 catches for 918 yards and 6 touchdowns. A great year for a number two receiver behind current NFL receiver Marquise Lee. Once Lee got drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Nelson Agholor took the driver’s seat as the Trojans number one option. In 2014, Agholor caught 104 passes for 1,313 yards and got into the end zone 12 times.

Agholor has many attributes that will help the Eagles get down the field quickly. Agholor is quick, a great route runner, and has good hands. At this year’s NFL Combine, he posted a 4.42 40-yard dash time, one of the fastest among all receivers. Over his three years at USC he caught 179 passes, so he has the ability to keep the Eagles offense moving and score some touchdowns for fantasy owners out there.

The only issue I see with Agholor will be that he is only 6-feet tall. With cornerbacks and safeties getting bigger and bigger each year, Agholor might have a hard time separating from the coverage. I see Agholor as more of a slot receiver than a prototypical “x” receiver. Being in the slot could create some match-up problems for defenses. Teams will have to decide whether or not to stick one of their corners or free safety on him with his speed (opening the field up for the other receivers), or take the risk with a linebacker trying to chase him around the field (in which case I’ll take Agholor all day).
Nelson Agholor reminds me a lot of Jeremy Maclin with that speed and hands, and that is why I like the Eagles picking him up. He will have to step up and become one of the star receivers if the Eagles want any chance of winning the tough NFC East. He will be seeing and competing against some of the best receivers in that division. Guys like Odell Beckham Jr. (Giants), Dez Bryant (Cowboys), and DeSean Jackson (the team in Washington). Agholor is hungry to prove he can be one of the best, and he is proud to be a Philadelphia Eagle as he tweeted this after being drafted.
