Instead of facing the Boston Celtics this time around, the Lakers found themselves in the same arena as the Detroit Pistons.
Detroit’s namesake in Isiah Thomas was the determining factor, as he was not 100 percent late in a crucial Game 6 that the Lakers won by just a single point (103-102).

Thomas experienced some issues with his ankle and even though he was in great pain, he set the NBA Finals mark for points in a quarter with 25 in the third of the game before the finale.
The Lakers won Game 7 108-105 in the way they know best — dramatic fashion.
It was beyond a heart break for the state of Michigan and the Pistons as a franchise as they saw another 3-2 series lead evaporate at the hands of team from Los Angeles.
The weirdest part? It made Pat Riley look like a magician.
After winning the 1987 title, Riley promised all of Lakers nation that they would win it again.
It took seven games to do the repeat, but they got the job done.
The Lakers beat none other than the Boston Celtics the previous season (4-2).
