Chicago Blackhawks Hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup Once Again!

The chess match between two of the NHL’s top teams continues…

The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2015 Stanley Cup Champions! They defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-0 in Game 6 on Monday night and clinch the series 4-2.  It is their third championship in 6 seasons, safe to say this team has turned into a dynasty.  The other team that was thinking of being coined a dynasty were the LA Kings, who won the Stanley Cup last season, and two out of the last four seasons (they still have a shot at being one, no doubt about it).

This season was not an easy one for the Blackhawks.  They dealt with injuries (Patrick Kane‘s clavicle), the normal ups and downs of the grueling 82 game season, and even a goalie switch during the NHL Playoffs.

  • The Chicago Blackhawks finished the 2015 season 48-28-6.  In the first round of the playoffs, the Blackhawks had to skate with the Nashville Predators, who held the #1 seed in the West for most of the season until they sputtered toward the end.  It was a hard fought series, but the Blackhawks prevailed in 6 games.

A second round match-up with the Minnesota Wild.  This series should have been closer in my opinion, but the Blackhawks were faster, stronger, and just the better team to sweep the Wild right out of the playoffs.

Most NHL fans would say that the next series should have been the NHL Finals.  Blackhawks versus Ducks.  I am definitely not taking anything away from the actual finals match-up with the Tampa Bay Lightning, it was one of the better NHL Finals I’ve seen in a while.  But, Blackhawks/Ducks was Goliath vs. Goliath.

Naturally, the two teams went back and forth, eventually leading to the greatest thing in sports, a Game 7.  In the past, Anaheim has had it’s misfortune with game 7’s, and history would repeat itself again.  The Blackhawks struck first with the Captain, Jonathan Toews, putting the puck in the back of the net.  The Hawks would go on to defeat the Ducks 5-3 and advance to the NHL Finals against the Lightning.

The Lightning were an interesting team that can score a lot, and got a hot goaltender in Ben Bishop once the playoffs started.  The Lightning held their own by holding a 2-1 series lead, until the Blackhawks started to figure things out.  The Blackhawks wouldn’t look back by winning the next three games and lifting up Lord Stanley’s Cup.

Duncan Keith, who scored the eventual series clinching goal in the 2nd period of game 6, was named the Conn Smythe Award winner for being the NHL Playoff MVP.  Some could say Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, or Corey Crawford (who I would have picked, dude had an unbelievable series and shut down the Lightning offense by only giving up 2 goals in the last 3 games).  But, any Blackhawk could have been picked to win the award. The more important trophy to any fan, coach, or player is Lord Stanley’s Cup and that is exactly what the Chicago Blackhawks did tonight by winning in front of their fans for the first time since 1938.

Now, LA Kings, it’s your turn.  Keep this great rivalry going.
