College World Series: Vanderbilt Calms Fullerton After The Storm
Rain, rain, go away, and please return after the 24th. In the opening round for the College Baseball World Series, at the TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, Cal State Fullerton faced off against the Vanderbilt Commodores on Sunday, June 14th through Monday, June 15th. From start to finish, this opening round game spanned 20 hours. Mother Earth was not looking over the Titans in the way that they wanted her to. Thunderstorms were expected for Sunday’s forecast, but no one thought it would postpone the College Baseball World Series. The umpires made the call and ended the game in the bottom half of the sixth and the Vanderbilt Commodores with one man on 3rd with 2 outs.

The star player was Titan ace, Thomas Eshelman, who was recently drafted in the 2nd round to the Houston Astros in the MLB Draft and was going head-to-head with Vanderbilt Junior Carson Fulmer for this pitcher’s duel. This delay ended Eshelman’s hot streak for the night. Eshelman showed to be the more economical pitcher with throwing 95 pitches in 5.2 innings. The Titan community would first have to hold out until Monday morning.
As the rain came pouring down in Omaha, the longer the team and their fans had to wait to play. Fullerton has yet to win a championship since 2004 and did not want the defending champions Vanderbilt to have this victory. With the game to start at 2 p.m. CT, Titan head coach Rick Vanderhook chose to start Chad Hockin when they resumed play on Monday afternoon.

On Sunday, the Titan offense started off with an RBI single by Taylor Bryant in the top of the 3rd. Timmy Richards scored two out of the three Fullerton runs scoring on a wild pitch by Fulmer in the fifth. The Titans had the pressure on them because of their young players but knew that they have the trust in their pitching and offense to stay on top and win it all. Zander Wiel hit a blazer to right center to get the Commodores first run of the game. Heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, Tyler Peitzmeier comes in for relief for Hockin and pitched two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth to keep the score at 3-1.
The ninth inning rolled along and Bryan Reynolds hit a double to score Wiel and cut the lead down to one. All of this action was even happening with only one out. Jeren Kendall up to bat with a man on base and launches a fastball over the fence for a walk-off win against the Titans. Vanderbilt plays TCU on Tuesday in a winner’s bracket at 8 p.m. ET. Cal State Fullerton will face off against LSU in an elimination game at 3 p.m. ET.
