Rain And Lightning Suspend CSUF Titans CWS Opener

On Sunday night, the Cal State Fullerton Titans started their championship run at the College World Series in Omaha.  The first challenge that stood in the Titans way were the reigning NCAA Champions Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt has a stacked team with guys like Dansby Swanson, who was picked #1 in the MLB Draft last week by the Arizona Diamondbacks, along with their ace Carson Fulmer, selected 8th overall by the Chicago White Sox.

  • Cal State Fullerton has some good players of their own with strikeout machine Thomas Eshelman, 46th overall to the Houston Astros.  David Olmedo-Barrera and Jerrod Bravo have been some of the big hitters for a Titans offense that has been lackluster at times during the season.

In the College World Series, it is a double elimination tournament, so getting into the winner’s bracket is vital to avoid being done too early.  The three games before the Titans and Commodores (Virginia beat Arkansas 5-3, Florida crushed Miami 15-3, and TCU stomped LSU 10-3), there was an overabundance of runs scored.  This would not be case in the last game on Sunday.  Thomas Eshelman (8-5, 1.58 ERA) took on Carson Fulmer (13-2, 1.82 ERA), and runs would most likely be a premium in this one.

The way the game was unfolding in the first two innings, it seemed as if 1 or 2 runs can win this game.  Eshleman, to this point, had struck out 5 of the first 6 batters he faced.

In the top of the third, Timmy Richards led off with a walk and eventually got to second base on a Carson Fulmer balk.  A.J. Kennedy would sacrifice Richards to third with 1 out.  Taylor Bryant would bring Richards home with his RBI single to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

Jumping to the 5th inning, Richards would draw his second walk of the night.  Eventually, Richards would score on a Fulmer wild pitch to make it 2-0 Titans.  Lead-off hitter Josh Vargas stepped up and delivered with an RBI single to right to score A.J. Kennedy for a commanding 3-0 lead, especially with Eshelman on the mound.

With Eshelman dealing (8 K’s through 5 2/3 innings), lightning and rain was getting closer and closer to TD Ameritrade Park.  The game was suspended due to this weather, and will resume Monday morning.

For the Titan faithful that are watching from rainy Nebraska to sunny California, lets hope that this delay does not take away any momentum the Titans had.  We know that Eshelman will not be on the mound to finish this game, so hopefully the bullpen and sound defense of the Titans can help close this game out and look forward to the TCU Horned Frogs.

    TUSKS UP!
