USWNT Impressive v Germany, Onto The Women’s World Cup Final

facebooktwitterreddit

It was a battle between the #1 team offensively against the #1 team defensively.  The German women have scored the most goals (20) in the Women’s World Cup, while the USWNT have only allowed one goal throughout the tournament.  They are ranked #1 and #2 in the world, with Germany possessing the #1 ranking.

The German top offense started the match with a lot of pressure, a lot of energy and a lot of effort….in the first 15 minutes.  It was a back and forth game, which benefited the United States.  The pace of the match went full throttle and Germany’s pressure on the U.S simmered down.

  • The #2 ranked team dominated the first 45.  They had more possession, more shots, more scoring opportunities and more intensity in the first half.  A solid back line anchored by Julie Johnston kept the Germans at bay.  The U.S were unable to reward their first half effort with a goal, finishing the half tied at zero.

In the 2nd half the United States women were hit again by the German pressure, yet came out unscathed and pushed forward.  After settling into the 2nd half the Germans continued to press and earned a penalty kick after Johnston committed a foul that some say could’ve been a red card.  So it was Germany’s leading scorer in the tournament Celia Sasic (6) who took the PK….and missed the entire goal.

After Germany’s miss, the United States decided to step it up and get some attempts of their own.  Another call by the referee seemed to go in the U.S’s favor as star forward Alex Morgan was fouled just outside of the 18-yard box but still awarded the penalty kick.

And in the 69th minute Carli Lloyd buried her own penalty kick and the United States women never looked back.  Kelly O’Hara knocked in her first national team goal in the 84th minute, sealing a 2-0 victory and their fate in the World Cup Final.

Lloyd finished with an assist and a goal and she spoke afterwards saying ” I just slotted it home I knew what I had to do.   This is what we train for…but my eyes are on the final right now.”

Megan Rapino added to the teams play in the semi-final and making it to their second straight World Cup Final : “Brilliant….we were soo much more aggressive…that’s what we’ve been hoping for for a long time.  It’s a feat just to get to the final, so proud to be a part of it and we’re going back!”

Head Coach Jill Ellis was concise about the teams performance, “The players just executed and that was the key.”

There is potential to play Japan in the World Cup Final come Sunday, as the defending Women’s World Champions play England in the other semi-final tomorrow afternoon.  You think they want revenge from their 2011 defeat ?  You can bet on it.  As if the team needed extra motivation playing on 4th of July weekend!  Japan or England will have to play the game of their lives if they want to survive a Finals match up with this U.S women’s team.  I predict the score in the Women’s World Cup Final, U.S 3 opponent 1.  The match will be played Sunday July 5th at 4pm in Vancouver, Canada at BC Place.

Lloyd will carry her 3 game scoring streak and goal keeper Hope Solo will bring her 513 minute shutout streak to Sunday’s Final.  The U.S are now 7-0-5 in the last 12 matches against Germany.
