NFL To LA: Rose Bowl Declines Temporary Stadium Status

Fans who were looking forward to watching NFL football being played in the Rose Bowl are going to be disappointed to hear that it will not likely be happening. According to the Los Angeles Times article, Rose Bowl Officials have unanimously voted against the use of the Rose Bowl as a temporary home for an NFL team. In what seems to be an extremely prideful and rash decision, Rose Bowl officials indicated that they would rather focus on landing music or arts festivals then a season or two of NFL football.

Officials indicated that they did not want to be a part of a “bidding war”.  Yet according to NFL to LA insider Vincent Bonsignore, The Pasadena City Council could choose to ignore the Rose Bowl Committees decision, so as of now there is nothing set in stone. Plus, we cannot forget that there is another former NFL stadium sitting right in the heart of the city.

I can see why the Rose Bowl would be the first choice for a Temporary NFL home in LA. The Stadium has the capacity to house an NFL type crowd.  It is already a premier college football stadium so of course it could handle NFL wear and tear, and parking is not as much as a hassle for spectators as it is in the Coliseum.  Just playing in the Rose Bowl is a privilege regardless what day of the year it is.

Yet let us not see this as a roadblock for the return of any of these Former NFL teams (and yes, Chargers played here for a year). The Coliseum is more than a viable option and let us not forget about the Stub Hub Center.  Both of these Stadiums are more than capable for being a temporary home for your Los Angeles (Insert team name here). If anything this is just more news to add the twisted web of NFL news.

If anything, temporary stadium news pales in comparison to which actual stadium is going to be built. A team WILL be here, there is no doubt about it. With the Raiders being offered one of the worst deals in Stadium history and the Chargers continuously dodging the City of San Diego like a crazy ex, there is more than enough juicy gossip to go around.

As for the Rose Bowl committee, it is hard to understand why they would not want to house an NFL team for a year or two. They already house your UCLA Bruins. Their locker rooms are updated, other than the concrete benches, seating is not that bad, and there is more than enough Box seats to make this stadium 21st century relevant. I believe the committee is making a rather huge mistake. They have an opportunity to make history within the city. They can either jump on the NFL to LA train or wave as this opportunity passes them by.
