Quakes’ Josmar Cordero Got It Done At LoanMart Field On Wednesday Afternoon

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes hosted the second game of a four game series against the Lancaster JetHawks. The Dodgers’ minor league affiliate team suffered a tough loss on Tuesday night 4-0.


The game started off on a slow start for the Quakes as their first hit came in the 3rd inning.

However, the Lancaster Jethawks pitching put the Quakes under a tight leash. Daniel Mengden’s had only allowed the Quakes to squeeze in two hits where the Quakes got back-to-back singles by Josmar Cordero and Jacob Scavuzzo.

The Jethawks responded in the top of the 4th, with two men on base, Ronnie Mitchell with a RBI double to center fielder Travis Witherspoon.

The very next batter, Mott Hyde singled to Cordero in right field to bring in Jacob Nottingham. In the bottom of the 6th, with 2 men on base, Paul Hoenecke doubled to right fielder Mitchell and Brandon Dixon and Cody Bellinger scored to put the Quakes on the board.

The Quakes starter, Brock Stewart also had 6 innings pitched, with 6 hits, 3 earned runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts with a 5.17 ERA.

Cal State Fullerton Alumni third baseman J.D. Davis went 0-for-4 in the game with one walk and struck out twice.

His batting average is at .277. Mengden went 6 innings with 6 hits, 3 runs, which were all, earned, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts with a 5.18 ERA. Albert Minnis relieved Daniel Mengden in his pitching duties in the bottom of the 7th.

The first batter up, Jacob Scavuzzo launches a long ball to left field for his second of the year and the Quakes lead the Jethawks 4-3.

In the top half of the 8th inning, a top prospect in the minor leagues, A.J. Reed hit a leadoff double to left field.

After Nottingham getting hit by a pitch, Mitchell hit into a sacrifice bunt to picture Joe Broussard to second baseman Dixon.

With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Hyde hit a double to left fielder Scavuzzo and scored in Reed and Nottingham.

The Lancaster Jethawks take the lead 5-4. Cuba native Erisbel Arruebarrena had a leadoff walk in the 8th. The very next batter, Hoenecke singled to right field and Arruebarrena advanced to 3rd base.

Tyler Ogle then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Arruebarrena and tie up the game at 5 a piece.

In the 9th, pitcher Michael Johnson had a 1,2,3 inning with 2 strikeouts and a pop out. And the game was headed to extra innings.

Another change for the Quakes, a 6’3” 225 pound, right-handed pitcher Caleb Dirks, was able to keep the Jethawks from scoring and giving the Quakes a chance to win it all.

With back-to-back singles by Hoenecke and Ogle, Josmar Cordero hit the game-winning single to score in Hoenecke.

Caleb Dirks get the win and is now 1-0 and Andrew Walker got the loss and is not 2-2 with a 5.84 ERA. The Quakes are now 7-6 in the California League Standings and are only one game back from the Jethawks.

The hero of the game, Venezuelan Josmar Cordero said, “These games you don’t predict games and the way that these games go you just have to continue playing hard.”
