Dodgers Release Chris Heisey From An Already Crowded Outfield
As the Dodgers continue their road trip, they opened up a three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates They started the series with an enticing- pitching matchup with Clayton Kershaw and Gerrit Cole on the mound.
The Dodgers opened up the game with some under the radar news. Making a move in the outfield that didn’t come much of a surprise.
Chris was acquired by the Dodgers in the off-season to bring more outfield depth, to an outfield that already had plenty before Heisey was acquired. LA has Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson, Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and Scott Van Slyke. Utility players Enrique Hernandez and Alex Guerrero are able to sub in if needed.

Heisey was traded to the Dodgers in the off-season from the Cincinnati Reds, who acquired Matt Magill.
This move for the Dodgers really makes sense as the outfield was crowded from the start, with so many talented players that contribute to the Dodgers with their bat and with their glove.
It also makes it easy that Chris Heisey hasn’t really done anything for the Dodgers. Chris’ batting average was .154 in 26 at bats. More of an insurance policy, Heisey simply isn’t needed anymore.

Dodgers Way
Heisey was DFA on July 30 to make room on the roster for the massive 13 player deal involving the Dodgers, Braves and Marlins.
LA has a more pressing need to add pitching options for their bullpen. Joel Peralta may be another candidate to be released given his struggles. Mike Bolsinger is also injured and could minimize the Dodgers’ options. To pile on Carlos Frias had a set back during his rehab too. LA is 22nd in the majors with a bullpen ERA of 3.97. That’s not good for a team with championship aspirations.
Heisey’s release is insignificant because he was not a major contributor. The front office is well aware they need to add more arms to the team which may prompt them to be on the lookout in the August waiver trade deadline. It’s unclear what pitchers are out there at the moment that can help the Dodgers but there has been some movement in the majors already.

The Dodgers two aces Clayton Kershaw (leads MLB in K’s) and Zack Greinke (leads MLB in ERA) have been superb this season. Brett Anderson has earned his 10-million dollars this season as he has also been solid. The jury is still out on Mat Latos and Alex Wood but nonetheless they have more major league experience than Bolsinger and Carlos Frias.
The Heisey move clearly had no impact on the team. Wouldn’t necessarily call it a failed move because he never had a chance with Pederson’s emergence, Puig’s potential and Crawford and Ethier’s bloated salaries. LA’s brass knows what it must do to make this team stronger.
