USC: Steve Sarkisian, Turn Down For… What???
By now many of you have undoubtedly heard or read about Steve Sarkisian’s speech at Saturday night’s Salute to Troy dinner at USC. That’s right, it’s not just a rumor that Coach Sark was more than “hydrated” at the annual donor event. On an evening where the football program is supposed to shine, Coach Sark gave it a shiner. He has since apologized for his “behavior and inappropriate language.” Athletic Director Pat Haden also made it clear that it was unacceptable in a statement released this morning.
While talking about Notre Dame, Arizona State, and Oregon, Coach Sark said “They all suck.” I don’t know about the rest of you, but I find that pretty funny. It becomes less funny however when you realize he is actually 0-9 vs. the Ducks and Sun Devils (all of the Oregon losses by more than 3 touchdowns yikes!). There’s also the moment when he shouted Fight the F*** On! Again not that big a deal until you realize that crowd is full of Donor’s to the program.

I am no college football coach, but that doesn’t seem like the kind of setting to knock back a few shots of fireball (which he apparently was seen doing). If anybody reading this is thinking this is all just overblown or exaggerated I encourage you to check out the tweets from people at the event last night. The fact of the matter is this would look bad not just for ANY head football coach but anybody in a position of authority in any line of work. The fact that he is the USC Head Football Coach magnifies everything.
Let’s give this whole thing some context. For all we know this could be a simple mistake, a bad night for Steve Sarkisian. Certainly we’ve all been there at some point or another. Earlier in the day he was quoted saying the USC QB’s had an “average at best practice” and was short with the media after a very disappointing offensive performance. He is also going through a divorce which was filed back in April this year. I wouldn’t speculate anything other than it must be tough especially because he has 3 young children.

That being said, this situation comes at the Heels of a program that is trying to distance itself from 5 years of NCAA sanctions. Last year’s Salute to Troy night was also the Night Josh Shaw sprained both ankles jumping off a balcony sparking that forgetable debacle. It comes just before the 2015 season kicks off with the Men of Troy ranked 8th in the AP poll with expectations of a PAC 12 Title and perhaps more.
Should the team not meet expectations they’re set up for one heck of a fall. Obviously I don’t wish that on this team and I hope they will be able to put this behind them, but you cannot deny this looks bad. Now sure it could be worse, this isn’t exactly a 10-7 home loss to Washington State or crashing your motorcycle with a hot young intern riding in the back. Just remember that these things add up especially if the team under performs. As always I’m interested to hear what you think Trojan fans.
