The Case For Jeff Van Gundy

Jeff Van Gundy, as experienced in the realm of coaching as he is, might be a good pick for the Lakers, but not the best one.

Once he left coaching for the broadcast booth after the 2006-2007 season, a year he spent with the Houston Rockets, it just seems like an awkward time for him to throw his name back into the ring.

Considering that the Lakers really want to stress building on what they’ve established so far in terms of chemistry and how they want to play the game collectively, hiring Van Gundy would put that plan to waste pretty quickly.

Yes, he’s an aggressive coach and would be able to put a fire under the belly of the entire roster — heck, maybe even Roy Hibbert — but the reason he’s not the right fit for the Lakers is pretty simple.

Despite that being a great asset to have as a coach, Van Gundy’s fit seems more appropriate in a return to the Houston Rockets.

Steve Kerr was able to throw himself back into the game after becoming part of the media, but the only reason he found success — and the same could be said about Walton — is because he has the best roster from head to toe in all of the NBA.

Van Gundy wouldn’t have anywhere close to that with the Lakers, which only seems to leave everyone involved with a headache.
