The only reason that Kevin Ollie would be able to beat out the other candidates for this opening right off the bat is his known connection with soon-to-be free agent Kevin Durant.

What hangs in the balance should the team hire Ollie to be the next head coach is more than meets the eye.

Los Angeles has been waiting for a long time since it was last able to bring a valuable free agent to the Lakers, and if things were to go in their favor later this off-season, Ollie would be their best way to grab Kevin Durant from the market.

Durant’s gaze would likely be set on at least an offer from the Lakers in this scenario, but again the Lakers have to be willing to go all in on the gamble.

Because if not, they’ll end up embarrassed like they were not too long ago with all of the talk regarding the potential signing of LaMarcus Aldridge that ended up being hot air.

Ollie has impressed at UConn, but aside from the higher chance of getting Kevin Durant, the Lakers need to do a full evaluation before giving him the keys to the team.
