The latest Lakers rumors are centered in on Mitch Kupchak.

With the hiring of Magic Johnson as an advisor, Lakers President Jeannie Buss has indicated that the current brain trust may be on its last legs.

In 2014 when Jim Buss assured his family and fellow owners that the Lakers would be contending by 2017, he unknowingly began the clock on his own tenure.

It seems now Magic Johnson has signaled that not only is Buss expendable but perhaps Lakers Vice President Mitch Kupchak may be on his way out as well.

Kupchak, a former Lakers player, has been part of the front office since he retired in 1986.

It’s now coming out in a Kevin Ding article for Bleacher Report, that Magic Johnson has an “open mind,” when it comes to dismissing Kupchak along with Jim Buss.

Most telling is the fact that Jim Buss was not aware that Magic would return in an official capacity with the team.

Only Jeanie Buss and the rest of her siblings were in the loop on the decision, which means Kupchak was probably unaware as well.

Magic and Kupchak have been close before both as teammates and when Magic held a small ownership piece.

The Lakers struggles on the court may have eroded any insulation Kupchak had built up in guiding the Lakers to 4 championships as the director of player personnel.

Though Magic has said he is only there to advise, past comments about Jim Buss and his thoughts on Kupchak point to a direction where some house cleaning may occur.
