With Jim Buss fired, the Lakers proved they aren’t messing around anymore.

If you were wondering how long it would take for Los Angeles to get back to competing, wonder no more. After news broke that Mitch Kupchak was fired, the same fate fell on now former general manager Jim Buss.

The team plans on looking for a new general manager to go alongside new team president Magic Johnson. Showing belief in the young core is what got Magic Johnson back in the picture, and it’s now paid off.

Coming full circle, Johnson will now have the chance to back up his claim about the Lakers being a “superstar away” from getting back in the title conversation.

Additionally, Johnson has shown explicit support for point guard D’Angelo Russell. Even when the former second overall pick struggled or missed time due to injury, Johnson had his back.

The Lakers are now in position to really shake things up, as there’s still time to make a move before the trade deadline. Come Thursday, Los Angeles could have a new player in purple and gold if Johnson has any say in it.

He’s also been adamant about the Lakers thriving on their youth. It only furthers the message that the Lakers want to send by trading their veterans.

Lou Williams could reportedly be on his way to the Jazz, while DeMarcus Cousins could have his eye on the Lakers in the off-season. A number of things could happen now that the team is past ownership that failed to get them back to where they’re used to being.

Magic Johnson could really get the team on the right track, and that has to be exciting for a fan base hungry for another championship.
