Rose gives them something to trade mid-season

He’s not your starter, so trading him during the regular season should be on the table, especially for the right price. One of the things that’ll need to be decided this particular season is who, if anyone, gets traded from the young core.

Putting Rose in a package deal gives the Lakers more leverage, especially if he does well with them.

It’s how they acquired guys like Tyler Ennis last season.

Plus, if Rose goes off on a hot streak, the Lakers might decide then and there to have a bit of a fire sale. This off-season, getting a guy like Rose gives them that back door as well if he doesn’t do good in Los Angeles.

There will still be teams like Minnesota or San Antonio who would be willing to give him a shot at that point. And if that holds true at the midway point or earlier next season, expect the Lakers to milk it for all they possibly can.
