NBA Free Agency: Three reasons Lakers win by signing KCP
By Keith Rivas
The Lakers finally have a gutsy player
This might sound harsh, but the Lakers didn’t really have a gutsy player before signing Caldwell-Pope. Kobe Bryant was his own kind of savage, and could take any shot he wanted at any point.
Over the last few seasons, Lakers fans have had to watch the young core grow and go through a serious learning curve. With Caldwell-Pope, they’re getting a guard that can average double digits in scoring and isn’t still trying to get his feet wet.

It’ll be Caldwell-Pope’s fifth season when he plays for the Lakers. Also, it’ll be the perfect opportunity for the Lakers to show the rest of the league what they’re really made of. They won’t have playoff success if they don’t have a player that can take the hard shots and still take the blame if they don’t go in.
And now they do.
What this will do for their playoff chances is tremendous as well. With Detroit, Caldwell-Pope couldn’t carry them by himself. In Los Angeles, that’s the last thing he’ll have to do.
Instead of doing all of the dirty work, he’ll get to be himself and let his personality play out on the hardwood. Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram are the two guys this front office trust to be the leaders, so there’s a burden lifted for Caldwell-Pope right there as well.
