After Jonathon Simmons was passed by the Spurs, the Lakers should make the most of this opportunity to gain new talent.

At this point in time, the Lakers know a couple of things about their immediate future. Lonzo Ball can be the shining star that they drafted him to be. And the putting eggs in a basket for Paul George theory might not work out so smoothly.

It seems that Los Angeles needs to get more talent in order to be more attractive to George as a free agent. This comes from George’s own mouth, so it shouldn’t be something that they take lightly.

Also, now is the perfect time for them to change things around. Whether they want to admit it or not, getting Paul George will not be a game changer. Before that even happens, the front office can’t miss what’s in front of them.

Depending on what they’ve got at the end of this season in the win column and on the floor, they might not even need Paul George.

However, to assume that Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka would pass on a superstar like that would be ignorant to assume. With that in mind, guard Jonathon Simmons makes a lot of sense.

So long as you can get him to agree on a one year deal, it would make sense for both sides. There aren’t too many teams making Simmons a top priority, and he showed what he’s capable of in San Antonio.

When surrounded by the right environment, Simmons is the kind of player that can excel in whatever the needed role happens to be.

Also, if the Lakers have given light of day to Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose, what is stopped them from someone who’s not as old or injured as the other guys?

With the Spurs, Simmons averaged about six points and two rebounds per game. Those kind of stats would be welcome by a second or even third reserve on the depth chart.

Lastly, for Los Angeles to get what it wants, this front office needs to take more gambles. They had no problem gambling on Lonzo Ball over D’Angelo Russell — so now let’s see if they make other moves.
